Book Title: SILENT MENACE
Character Name: Hailey Nieland
How would you describe your family?
Oh, my family is great. I’m the youngest of four and the only one of the sibling group to still live in the area. Growing up on a farm just outside a small town, I never thought their careers would take them elsewhere, but that’s life, I guess. My parents and cousins are still nearby, and I’m so glad they are—I don’t know how I would have managed this last year alone.
Do you have a significant other?
Um . . . no. Not anymore.
Biggest challenge in relationships?
Honestly, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to trust a man again. Not after I missed the signs with my late husband.
Where do you live?
I live just outside Kincaid, Kentucky - about 15 minutes from where I grew up. Close enough to Cincinnati, Ohio, to enjoy the benefits of being near a city, but far enough away to pretend it doesn’t exist during our day to day.
Do you have any enemies?
If you’d asked me that a few days ago, I would have said no (well, except for the people who think I had something to do with what my husband did - but they’re not really enemies, just not friendly anymore). But I’m not sure now. I think someone might be targeting me, and I have no idea why.
Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
Both. Jenna, my almost-two-year-old, is an amazing little girl. She’s been profoundly deaf since birth, so we’re learning ASL together. And then there’s Maggie, our golden retriever. She’s the sweetest dog ever, and she thinks Jenna is her personal responsibility. I love the bond they have.
What do you do for a living?
I’m an accountant. Nothing too exciting, but it pays the bills.
Greatest disappointment?
My marriage. Wesley always loved me, I know he did. But what he did was so incredibly foolish. And now he’s gone.
Greatest source of joy?
My little girl, hands down. No matter how rough my workday, I know if I can just make it through to our evenings and weekends, everything will be okay for awhile.
What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?
Read? I guess? Between working full-time and having a toddler, I don’t really have time for much else. But I’m learning to fit in some me-time too. Oh, and I guess family get-togethers count. I usually host those at my house once or twice a month since I have more space than anyone else. They’re exhausting, but having company boosts my spirits.
What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?
I still blame myself for being so oblivious to what Wesley was up to, but I’m trying not to. Intellectually, I know it wasn’t my fault. Doesn’t mean I don’t feel at least partially responsible.
What keeps you awake at night?
Thoughts of Wesley and the mess he left me in.
What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Finances are always of some concern nowadays, but now that I’ve landed a major client, things should ease up a bit. Their accounts are an absolute pain though. Someone in that firm has no idea how to keep books. But I’ll figure things out. And hopefully, whoever slashed my tires was just a bored teenager . . .
